- 要旨:Morphophonological processes in Japanese compounds are known to be sensitive to the prosodic length of their elements. Two types of length effects have been reported: a categorical one (e.g. rendaku, compound accent) and a gradient one (apophony). Using a survey of existing compounds, Salingre (2022) pointed out that the ame/same ("rain") allomorphy may also be sensitive to the length of the first element (E1). However, the number of compounds with a long E1 was too limited to determine the type of length effect. In this study, a forced-choice experiment was conducted on native Japanese speakers to verify Salingre's (2022) claims on ame/same. The results indicate that the ame/same allomorphy is indeed sensitive to the length of E1: same appears more frequently when E1 is short. Concerning the type of length effect, it appears to be categorical: same is more frequent when E1 is one foot long. In conclusion, ame/same seem to behave like compound accent and rendaku.
